Carpet, Vinyl or Laminate: Which Flooring Is Best for Each Room?

Choosing flooring can feel simple until you actually have to do it.

Suddenly you’re looking at carpet, vinyl, laminate, underlay, colours, textures and prices, and every room seems to need something different.

The good news is that you don’t need to know all the technical details before you visit us. It just helps to think about how each room is used.

Bedrooms

Carpet is still a favourite for bedrooms because it feels warm, soft and comfortable.

Most people want a bedroom to feel calm and cosy, so carpet usually makes sense. You can go for something soft underfoot, a warm neutral shade, or a colour that works with your furniture and bedding.

Bedrooms don’t usually get the same foot traffic as hallways or stairs, so you may not need the toughest carpet in the shop.

Living rooms

For living rooms, it depends on how you use the space.

If you want comfort, warmth and a softer feel, carpet is a good choice. If the room gets a lot of use, especially with children or pets, you may want something more hardwearing.

Laminate can work well if you prefer a cleaner, wood-effect finish. It’s easy to maintain and can make a room feel more modern.

Stairs and hallways

Stairs and hallways take a lot of wear, so this is where the right choice really matters.

A hardwearing carpet is often a good option because it gives grip, comfort and warmth. The colour and texture matter too, as very pale carpets may show marks more quickly in busy areas.

Good underlay and proper fitting are also important here.

Kitchens

Vinyl is a popular choice for kitchens because it’s practical and easy to clean.

It can handle the everyday spills and splashes that happen in a kitchen, and there are plenty of styles available, from simple designs to wood-effect and tile-effect options.

Laminate can work in some kitchens too, depending on the product and how the room is used.

Bathrooms

Vinyl is usually the most sensible option for bathrooms.

Carpet is not normally recommended in wet areas, and laminate needs to be chosen carefully because moisture can be an issue.

Vinyl gives you a practical finish while still offering plenty of choice in colour and style.

Box rooms and spare rooms

If you’re sorting a smaller room, a remnant can be a brilliant way to save money.

Carpet remnants are often ideal for box rooms, spare bedrooms, small offices and little spaces where you don’t need a full roll.
